The computer-based examination runs in two sessions on the same day, 90 questions and 270 marks in total. Both sessions are compulsory and skipping either one disqualifies you. The marking rules differ between them, which is the single most important thing to understand before you sit the paper.
SESSION I — 45 minutes, no negative marking
Numerical and Mathematical Ability — 20 questions, 60 marks
Reasoning Ability and Problem Solving — 20 questions, 60 marks
Session I total — 40 questions, 120 marks
SESSION II — 45 minutes, 1 mark deducted per wrong answer
General Awareness — 25 questions, 75 marks
English Language and Comprehension — 25 questions, 75 marks
Session II total — 50 questions, 150 marks
Attempt every question in Session I. There is no penalty there, so a blank answer is a wasted mark. Session II deducts a full mark per wrong answer, which is heavier than SSC CGL's 0.50, so guess only when you can eliminate at least two options.
Candidates must have passed Class 10 (Matriculation) from a recognised board. No higher qualification is required and none carries preference. Along with SSC GD Constable, this is the lowest educational bar of any SSC recruitment, which is why MTS draws among the largest applicant pools in the country.
The age bracket is 18 to 25 years for most Multi-Tasking Staff posts and 18 to 27 years for Havaldar posts in CBIC and CBN. Upper age limits are relaxed by three years for OBC (non-creamy layer), five years for SC and ST, and ten years for persons with benchmark disabilities. Confirm the exact band for your post in the notification when it is published.
Physical tests apply only to Havaldar applicants, not to Multi-Tasking Staff posts. They are held after the written examination and are qualifying in nature.
PET, male candidates — walk 1600 metres in 15 minutes
PET, female candidates — walk 1 kilometre in 20 minutes
PST, male candidates — height 157.5 cm, relaxable by 5 cm for Garhwalis, Assamese, Gorkhas and Scheduled Tribes; chest 76 cm unexpanded with a minimum 5 cm expansion
PST, female candidates — height 152 cm, relaxable by 2.5 cm for the same groups; weight 48 kg, relaxable by 2 kg
Multi-Tasking Staff and Havaldar are Pay Level 1 posts on the 7th Pay Commission matrix, with a basic pay of Rs 18,000. In-hand pay adds Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and Transport Allowance, which vary with the posting city, and typically brings monthly take-home into the Rs 22,000 to Rs 28,000 range. Havaldar posts in CBIC may carry additional allowances depending on the posting.
